What is Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead)?

Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a beautiful Mexican tradition that celebrates the lives of departed loved ones. Unlike Halloween, this is a joyful celebration of life, memory, and family. Honoring those who have passed with love, food, music, and remembrance.

Join Reinas and Chicano Street Kitchen as we bring Jacksonville's inaugural Day of the Dead celebration to life. An authentic cultural experience that welcomes our entire community to learn, connect, and celebrate together.

THE OFRENDA 

🕯️ Honor Your Loved Ones 🕯️

The ofrenda (memorial altar) is the heart of Day of the Dead celebrations. A beautiful space where we remember and celebrate those who have passed.

How to Participate:

Option 1: Drop off a photo at Reinas anytime after purchasing your ticket
Reinas Location: 408 Mill Ave Suite 1101, Jacksonville, NC

Option 2: Bring your photo with you on November 1st

Your loved one's photo will be lovingly displayed on our community altar, surrounded by traditional marigolds, candles, and the warm energy of our Jacksonville family.

Participation is optional but deeply meaningful


WHAT TO WEAR 

Dress Code: Elegant & Festive

Embrace the Spirit:

  • Traditional Day of the Dead attire welcome
  • Catrina makeup and costumes encouraged (especially for contest!)
  • Elegant cocktail attire appropriate
  • Vibrant colors that celebrate life: oranges, golds, purples, reds
  • Comfortable shoes for dancing

Not Required:

  • You don't have to dress as a Catrina to attend
  • All styles and comfort levels welcome
  • The most important thing is that you come ready to celebrate!

Q: Is this event appropriate for non-Hispanic people?
A: Absolutely! This celebration welcomes everyone. Day of the Dead is about honoring universal themes of love, memory, and family. We encourage all community members to learn, participate, and celebrate respectfully.

Q: Are children allowed?
A: This event is designed for adults 18+. The open bar and late-night timing make it more appropriate for adult audiences.

Q: Do I have to bring a photo for the ofrenda?
A: No, participation in the ofrenda is completely optional. Many people simply enjoy viewing and learning about the tradition.

Q: Can I buy tickets at the door?
A: We recommend purchasing in advance as we're limited to 70 guests. If tickets remain available, door sales will be $90 GA / $105 VIP.

Q: What if I can't attend after purchasing?
A: Tickets are transferable to friends/family. Contact us at least 7 days before the event for other arrangements.

Q: Is this a religious event?
A: While Day of the Dead has spiritual elements, this is a cultural celebration open to people of all beliefs focused on remembrance and community.

Q: What if I've never done Catrina makeup?
A: All skill levels welcome in the contest! It's about creativity and participation, not perfection. We'll share tutorial resources closer to the event.
